# Software Development Is Being Rewritten. The Biggest Change Isn't Code.

AI makes software easier to build, shifting competitive advantage to product judgment and customer outcomes.

AI is changing software development at a fundamental level.

The obvious story is that AI makes developers faster. But that misses the bigger shift.

**AI is changing who does the work, how teams are structured, and ultimately how companies build software.**

> The easier software becomes to build, the less valuable building software becomes as a competitive advantage.

AI agents can increasingly move beyond generating snippets of code. They can help define requirements, write and review code, generate tests, fix bugs, and support deployment. As these capabilities mature, the traditional software-development workflow starts to break down.

And that creates an interesting paradox: **the easier software becomes to build, the less valuable “building software” becomes as a competitive advantage.**

The scarce resource moves elsewhere.

It becomes the ability to identify the right problem, make good product decisions, design effective systems, and turn customer needs into outcomes. Developers increasingly become orchestrators of AI-powered development rather than simply producers of code.

This also changes the economics of software. Smaller teams may be able to build products that previously required much larger organizations. Experiments become cheaper. Development cycles become dramatically shorter. And the distance between an idea and a working product continues to shrink.

For technology leaders, the implication is clear:

**Don't just give your developers AI tools. Redesign your software-development model around what humans and AI are each best at.**

The winners won't necessarily be the companies with the most AI-generated code.

They'll be the companies that can **turn better ideas into working products faster than everyone else.**
